Tanzania - Field ResearchIn Tanzania, field recordings were made in the areas of Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Iringa, Kongwa, and Dodoma. Recordings included Sangoura drumming and dance from the village of Sekenke; Maheme women’s drumming; ilimba music of the Dodoma area; traditional music of the Wagogo Nyati group; and marimba music and dance from the Dene village.
Wagogo music features the ilimba and zeze (fiddle), which are tuned to the scale of a dominant seventh chord. Yet, contrary to what one would expect, from an unchanging harmonic modality, the Wagogo music continuously sounds fresh and engaging. Vibrant vocal solos soar over the ilimba and zeze continuo. |
