Each spring, more than half a billion birds of 280 species follow the Great Rift Valley along the length of the African continent from South Africa to Ethiopia, and over the Middle East to Turkey where they diverge to Europe and Asia, following one of the most important raptor and soaring bird migration corridors in the world. This flyway overarches a tapestry of ecosystems, cultures, and music traditions.

Just as migrating birds face numerous threats, many cultural traditions - and the heritage they embody - are also in danger of disappearing. As a musical metaphor for the interdependence of nature and culture, Flyways supports conservation relating to the birds and affirms the music traditions found throughout the region. With the motto “migrating birds know no borders,” and through the timeless languages of birds and music, Flyways encourages international collaboration to protect a shared heritage.
